How Gratitude is the Key to Happiness!
“Please stop complaining.
Be grateful for what you have.
Life is a present.”
In this blog, I want to talk about gratitude. It’s a massive component of happiness. In my opinion, people in the world are unhappy because they complain too much. We complain about our job or how we don’t have enough time or money, AND we take the things we do have for granted.
Think about this.
If you can read and understand my words, you are more fortunate than 99.9% of human civilisation. You have ears that work. You have a smartphone with an internet connection. You are educated enough to understand English and have access to food and fresh water. People take so much for granted in their lives.
Do people not realise how freaking fortunate they are? It is the best time to be alive. We have an abundance of everything. You can get your groceries delivered to you. You have a freaking supercomputer in your pocket, which can do things one could not even imagine just 20 years ago.
But all we do is complain. Complaining only reinforces the fact of what you lack. You are constantly telling yourself that you are not satisfied. And telling yourself that you are not happy is a surefire path to unhappiness.
How Gratitude Made me Happier
So, I did not consistently practice gratitude in my life before this year. I was grateful, but I used to complain a lot. I don’t mean out loud to people, but just internally, and I realised that was affecting my day-to-day happiness. So, this year I made a new year’s resolution, as we all do, to journal every day.
I set the bar shallow at just three lines:
- The highlight of the day
- One thing I am grateful for
- One thing I learned.
That’s it, just three lines per day. After a month or so, I realised how lucky I was. I became much more grateful and, as a result, a much happier person.
Practice this.
Do this exercise for one week. Count how many times you complain every day. I am sure you will be surprised at how much that is.
So if you wish to be happy, start by being grateful. Every day, write down one thing (ONE THING) that you are thankful for. Please write it down in a notebook, on your phone, laptop, or wherever. It could be the smallest of things. The fact that your body works properly, or your parents are still alive, or that you have great friends. It could be anything.
Do it for 30 days, and you will realise how much stuff you have taken for granted in your life and how lucky you are. Trust me; you will be a much happier person because of it.
So stop complaining and be grateful for what you have.
