Explosive and Implosive Anger: Two Different Ways People Show Anger
Have you ever seen someone get mad? Maybe you’ve even felt that way yourself! Anger is a normal emotion, but not everyone shows it the same way.
Psychologists talk about two main types of angry people: explosive and implosive. These two types show anger very differently, and both have their challenges. Let’s look at each one and learn why managing anger in a healthy way is so important.
Explosive Anger: The Outburst
Explosive anger is what you see when someone lets all their anger out in one big outburst. When a person has explosive anger, they don’t hold back! Imagine a customer who walks up to a cashier and is told that their coupon is expired. Instead of staying calm, the customer gets angry and starts yelling at the cashier. Maybe they’re frustrated because they wanted to save money, or maybe they’re just having a bad day. Either way, they let their anger out as soon as they feel it. This is explosive anger — when emotions erupt quickly, just like a volcano.
